Golf baggage at Lufthansa

If you are flying with Lufthansa on a golf holiday, you will find all the important information on the transport of golf baggage here. In addition, it is of course worth taking a look at the airline’s website, which can be found here.

Lufthansa golf baggage

Gone are the days when you could take your golf baggage with you for free with Lufthansa. The free baggage allowance includes one piece of baggage weighing a maximum of 23 kg in Economy Class and two pieces of baggage weighing up to 32 kg in Business Class. And the sentence “Sports baggage is transported free of charge within the free baggage allowance (number/weight of pieces). is no longer valid as of July 2013. The only exception is if you are a “Status Customer HON Circle Member”, “Senator” and “Star Alliance Gold Member”, then golf equipment will be transported free of charge. Again, no rule without exception. Excluded are the Light Fares in Economy Class and not routes to/from USA and Canada.

The prices

In April 2018, Lufthansa set new all-inclusive prices; since then, costs have been more dependent on the route. For example, the transport of golf equipment on a domestic route costs 70 euros. ( For comparison: in the old price list for tickets before 18.4.18 it was 50 Euro within Europe and for intercontinental flights it was 100 Euro). A “short intercontinental route” now costs 150 EUR, a “medium intercontinental route” 200 and on a “long intercontinental route” even 250 EUR. Further fares are available for flights to Japan (100 Euro) and North Africa, Central Asia and countries of the eastern Mediterranean coast (100 Euro), for routes within Europe 80 Euro are charged. Since the price zones are far from being self-explanatory, here is an overview of which country belongs to which:

What has not changed with the new prices is that the costs still apply to one route. In return you are allowed to take a golf bag “including golf clubs, balls and a pair of golf shoes”. But it is important that all parts are packed in one bag, this bag may have a dimension (height + width + depth) of 220 cm. If you plan to transport your golf baggage with Lufthansa, it is essential that you notify us in advance. It is also important that all parts are packed in the golf bag. Golf trolleys that are battery operated are prohibited.

Price example

For example, the route from Frankfurt to Cape Town is a long intercontinental route, which means that the transport of golf equipment costs 250 euros per piece and route.

The background

In the past, Lufthansa has adjusted prices and baggage regulations. So there is now a “light tariff“, which is offered without baggage. If you want to check in a suitcase there, you have to book it separately and pay about 15 Euro, or order the “Classic”-tariff right away. With this Lufthansa follows a trend which is not only followed by low-cost airlines. With the price increase in 2018 this development continues.
